Our lakes are at the heart of life in Haliburton County—but how healthy are they, and what can each of us do to protect them? On this episode of The Highlands Gardening and Environment Show, Dianne and Simon welcome Rosalie Kremn, a longtime environmental educator and lake steward. With a background in environmental studies and education, 36 years of teaching experience, and years of involvement in lake stewardship, Rosalie brings a wealth of knowledge to the conversation. As a Lake Steward with the South Portage Lake Property Owners’ Association, Rosalie has been involved in loon monitoring, water-quality research, citizen science, and efforts to educate waterfront property owners about lake and shoreline health. We talk about what good lake-quality water actually means, the role of citizen science and lake associations, why some property owners may not recognize the importance of lake stewardship, and whether local lake organizations need a stronger voice in protecting these important natural resources. And we finish with an important question: What gives Rosalie hope—and what is the one thing she would encourage every waterfront property owner to do to help protect our lakes?
